Colonoscopy Preparation
When you are preparing to have a colonoscopy, your doctor will
provide you with a list of things you can do in order to prepare
for the procedure. It is important to follow the instructions carefully,
as they will help your body to be ready for the colonoscopy and
will also make it possible for you to get through the actual procedure
with flying colors.
One of the most important things to remember during colonoscopy
preparation is that your doctor will want you to refrain
from using aspirin for some period of time before the day of your
colonoscopy. In most cases this will be in the range of three to
five days. The idea is to help reduce the potential for bleeding
in the event that polyps are found and need to be harvested for
a biopsy.
Another important factor will be your diet. Your doctor will most
likely give you a list of low fiber foods that you may enjoy for
one to three days before your colonoscopy. This does not mean that
you mix these in with all your other favorites. Instead, you will
rely greatly on this list to select the foods you will eat during
this time. The idea is to ensure the colon is not hampered with
the presence of any matter that may impact the colonoscopy itself;
basically, if there is nothing in the colon at the time of the procedure,
you will be much better off.
No doubt your doctor will give you a cutoff point the day before
on eating any type of food. This again is to ensure the colon is
not compromised with the presence of any solid matter. You will
not doubt be given liquid electrolytes or something similar to drink
during this period. Yes, it will be a lot to drink, but you will
be able to get it all down. Be prepared for the fact that the stuff
will taste nasty, in spite of the fact that it comes in several
different fruit flavors. Despite the taste and the quantity, drink
up and remember it will make the actual procedure run much more
smoothly.
One other important point to remember when undertaking colonoscopy
preparation. You will not be in any condition to drive
after the procedure, so make sure a loved one goes with you and
is there to get you back home. For the remainder of the day, you
will be instructed to rest. If at all possible, make sure someone
can remain in the house with you, on the off chance that you begin
to run a fever or perhaps experience dry heaves or another delayed
reaction to the anesthesia.
By understanding the basic nature of a colonoscopy, and what you
should do in the event you need to have one performed, you will
be in the position to make sure that your colonoscopy experience
goes smoothly and with no complications.
